Wang Yani: Former Child Prodigy, Current Adult Genius

So, we’ve done politicians, we’ve done scientists, which means it is now time to venture into the arts. The arts are something that Asian cultures have in bounties. For instance, the woman that we have chosen today, Wang Yani, a former child prodigy.

Wang Yani is a Chinese artist who began painting at the age of two-and-a-half, which is before I even knew what paint was. Her work was exhibited in China when she was four, marking her as a child prodigy, and her work began appearing on postage stamps when she was eight. Then, of course, just so the forces at work who made her could brag some more, she held a solo exhibit in London, the Smithsonian, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art at fourteen. Just because.

Wang Yani often painted animals, like monkeys, baboons, and cats, and she often did this with traditional Chinese brush techniques, which are something of the most astonishing pieces of culture in China. And Wang Yani painted for herself: she once said in an interview that she only paints because she loves doing it, because she loves using colors to create what she has in her imagination. She said: “When you pick up a brush, don’t ever ask anyone for help. Because the most wonderful thing about painting is being left alone with your own imagination. I do not paint to get praise from others, but to play a game of endless joy.”

Wang Yani is an artist who found her calling in life, and the reason why she is a woman who rocked the world is simple: because she is a woman who knew what she wanted, who worked towards what she wanted, and managed to excel in her own industry. She is a woman who was once a child prodigy, and when she grew up, became a woman who is a person an artist who has managed to make her impact before the age of 21.
